About this event

The Norah Fry Centre for Disability Studies invites you to:

Truth and Citizenship: exploring the relationship between evidence, values and society in the development of disability and social policy by Dr Simon Duffy and

Envisioning a great life: social enterprise, citizen research and embracing community by Fionn and Jonathan Angus as part of the School for Policy Studies Seminar Series at the University of Bristol

About the speakers

Dr Simon Duffy has been working alongside disabled people and their families since 1990. He is based in Sheffield, England and runs the Centre for Welfare Reform - a think tank which shares social innovations to advance social justice. Simon is also the Secretary to Citizen Network - a global cooperative working for a world where everyone matters. Simon is a writer, speaker and practical problem-solver. He founded and Inclusion Glasgow and In Control and led work on self-direction and citizenship for people with intellectual and development disabilities in Scotland and England. In 2008 he was awarded the RSA's Prince Albert Medal for social innovation and in 2011 the Social Policy Association Award for outstanding contribution to social policy. In 1994-95 Simon was also a Harkness Fellow, based in Denver Colorado. Simon has a doctorate in moral philosophy and writes on the welfare state, citizenship, social justice and inclusion. Key publications include Unlocking the Imagination (1996), Keys to Citizenship (2003) Women at the Centre (2011) A Fair Income (2011) Peer Power (2012) and The Unmaking of Man (2013). Simon is also a regular contributor to the Huffington Post.

When it comes to envisioning a great life, Fionn and Jonathan Angus are world-class imagineers. When life gives them lemons, they teach themselves how to juggle, and then make lemon meringue pie, and share some with the neighbours. Living in Galway, on the west coast of Ireland, this son and father team operate a social enterprise, funded through creatively personalised government grants and income earned working in the arts, media and education. As Citizen Researchers, working both with and independent of more traditional academics, they have the respect of seasoned researchers and policy makers, and have been invited to present their discoveries in dozens of colleges and conferences internationally. Embracing community is built right into the structure and goals of their company. They have collaborated in visual arts and music projects locally and internationally. They’ve learned lessons in the fine art of negotiating for things they are passionate about, from the soft sell to the High Court, and they share these with others seeking a great life.
